Since it has now been proven that the end of the world wouldn’t come in the form of some grand, dramatic global event, we can now point our fingers fearfully at space once again because it’s obvious that our demise will be delivered via aliens. Helping to ease our transmission from Mayan to extraterrestrial paranoia is a trailer for Aliens: Colonial Marines.
For those that need a little more background information, the game is said to be a sequel to the Aliens franchise, chronologically set after the third film, Alien 3 — a Warp Zoned article states that the game is considered one of the few canon materials in the Aliens universe by 20th Century Fox. Renown Battlestar Galactica writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle are in-charge of the script, forging an authentic world for the single-player story campaign. There’s also four-player co-op and an online mode called “Escape”, which will see a team of four marines up against four xenomorphs, both controlled by players.

Pre-orders for the game are already available and the details can be seen here. A Limited Edition and a Collector’s Edition is up for early grabs and both feature the Movie Characters Pack, allowing you to play as notable figures from the original 1986 movie in competitive multiplayer. The Collector’s Edition includes a resin figurine of a marine in the Caterpillar P-5000 Power Loader, the heavy-lifting exoskeleton that Ripley used in Aliens.
Aliens: Colonial Marines is developed by Gearbox Software and has a (current) worldwide release date of 12 February 2013 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. A Wii U version will be announced at a later date. Is anybody planning to hang from ceilings vomiting acidic bile on the helpless victims below? As a xenomorph that is, not some possessed demon-child — maybe that’ll be the next end-of-the world wild guess.
